New Zealand (or Aotearoa – land of the long white cloud), truly is one of the most picturesque and photogenic places on earth. A island nation of just over 4.5 million people, New Zealand is made up of two major land masses (North Island and South Island) and a number of smaller islands including Stewart Island located in the south western Pacific Ocean.
New Zealand is located approximately 1,500km east of Australia and about 1,000km from the Pacific Islands. Due to its relative remoteness and being water locked, New Zealand was one of the last countries to be found and settled.
The country is made up of some of the world most spectacular landscapes, from vast mountain ranges, steaming volcanoes to sweeping coastlines. It is a natural playground for thrill seekers and adventurers and those who simply want to visit for the culture and landscapes.
New Zealand is long and narrow (over 1,600 kilometers (990 mi) along its north-north-east axis with a maximum width of 400 kilometers (250 mi)), with about 15,000 km (9,300 mi) of coastline and a total land area of 268,000 square kilometers (103,500 sq mi) Because of its far-flung outlying islands and long coastline, the country has extensive marine resources. Its Exclusive Economic Zone is one of the largest in the world, covering more than 15 times its land area
Numbers of Muslim immigrants from South Asia and Eastern Europe settled from the early 1900s until the 1960s. Large-scale Muslim immigration began in the 1970s with the arrival of Fiji Indians, followed in the 1990s by refugees from various war-torn countries. The first Islamic centre was started in 1959 and there are now several Masjids. The majority of the Muslims are Sunni, who run the largest Masjid in the country.
Waikato Region and Hamilton City
Hamilton (Kirikiriroa) is the seat and most populous city of the Waikato region, in the North Island of New Zealand.
The Hamilton Urban Area is a New Zealand urban area in the Waikato Region. It is the fourth largest urban area in the country with a population of 224,000. At its centre is Hamilton City, New Zealand’s fourth largest territorial authority. While rural land separates Hamilton from many of the nearby towns, there is significant economic and social integration between the towns and Hamilton.
The city encompasses a land area of about 110 km2 (42 sq mi) on the banks of the Waikato River, and is home to 156,800 people, making it New Zealand’s fourth most-populous city. Hamilton City is part of the wider Hamilton Urban Area, which also encompasses the nearby towns of Ngaruawahia, Te Awamutu and Cambridge.
Muslims in Waikato Region
The Muslim population has grown substantially over the past one hundred years and deserves further study and elucidation. The 2013 government census recorded 2919 Muslims in the Waikato region (up from 2166 in 2006) Most reside in the only city of the area, Hamilton, which has been described as “the high tide mark of Western civilisation” in New Zealand.
Muslims have always worked in the Waikato and a strong work ethic remains one of the defining features of the community. All the identifiable migrants before the 1990s were employed here either as labourers or shopkeepers; international students arrived in the 1970s and refugees in the 1990s. The adherents of Islam have been resident in the area for over a hundred years but identities are difficult to pin down.
Hamilton West Islamic Centre
The league acquired land at 45-47 Bandon Street, Frankton converting the garage of a house and is temporarily using it as an Islamic centre.
Our purpose is to continue the teachings of our prophet Mohammed Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam by educating and spreading the word of the deen of Islam. To provide a full time qualified Alim to assist with the teachings. To educate children via madarsa programmes. Contributing and assisting society in times of need. Providing a sacred place for prayers 5 times a day including Jumma prayers and bringing together the Islamic community by organising religious functions.
Currently we have 40 children attending Madrsa classes with the Alim Teaching Islamiyat and the Holy Quran.
